How To Repost a Story on Instagram?

Instagram stories are one of the most widely used features on the platform. It allows people and brands to share moments, updates and insights about regular activities. Stories appear at the top of the app, which makes them highly visible and encourages users to open it because of a vibrant ring circling around the user’s profile picture. Because of this attractive visibility, reposting stories is one of the common practices to acknowledge mentions, share community feedback or highlight relevant content.

Yet reposting is not as simple as tapping only a button. The features come with clear rules around privacy, content ownership and sharing permissions. This blog explains how you can report a story on your Instagram account, along with connected factors.

What is Instagram Story Reposting?

The Instagram story reposting feature allows users to repost another person or brand’s story in their story for a maximum of 24 hours. But this feature is available only if certain conditions are met. As compared with feed posts, stories are designed to be temporary and more personal, which is why Instagram places additional restrictions on how these forms of media can be shared. The availability of the repost story features is based on the following:

  • Whether you are mentioned in the Story
  • The privacy settings of the original account
  • Whether the Story is still active
  • The sharing preferences of the original poster

Method 1 – Reposting a Story You’re Tagged In

Instagram automatically sends a notification in the form of a Direct Message if someone has mentioned your username in their story. You can then repost the story on your own account. Here’s how you can do that:

  • Open the Instagram app and go to your Direct Messages
  • Find the message that notifies you that you have been mentioned in a Story
  • Click on ‘Add to your story’
  • You can then customize the repost by adding text, stickers, or emojis if necessary
  • Share it to your story

When you repost the story, the original story will come through with the username of the person who posted it.

Important Note: This feature will only be available on a public account or when the user has enabled the story resharing feature on their account settings. When the user disables the resharing feature, the repost button will not appear, even when you are tagged.

Method 2 – Reposting a Story Without Being Tagged

In December 2025, Instagram introduced a platform update that allows sharing of public stories on the profile even though the user has not been tagged in any manner. Through the update, users are now able to share content more freely, which causes more content to be distributed throughout the platform.

Here is how you can repost public stories in your story:

  • Open the Story you want to share from a public account
  • If the creator has enabled the resharing of their content, you’ll see a Share/Reshare option
  • Tap that option to open the Story in your editor
  • You can customize your story and share it through your own Story.

The resharing option becomes unavailable if creators choose to disable their privacy setting, which controls resharing rights.

Method 3 – Reposting Your Own Story

Instagram enables users to share their previously posted stories. This feature allows users to restate the original message while sharing announcements and delivering new information. Instagram saves your stories to the archive automatically, except when you disable this feature.

Let’s have a look at how you can repost your own stories:

  • Go to your profile
  • Tap the menu icon
  • Open Archive
  • Select Stories Archive
  • Choose the Story you want to repost
  • Tap Share to post it again

A Quick Glance at How to Repost a Story on Instagram

Let’s revise how you can repost other Instagram users’ stories in your story:

Scenario Can You Repost? How to Do It?
Tagged in someone’s Story Yes Tap ‘Add to your Story’ from Direct Messages
Story from a public account without a tag Yes (if resharing is enabled) Use the Share/Reshare feature
Reposting your own Story Yes Use Stories Archive
Story from a private account (not tagged) No Cannot repost directly
Story expired and is not in the Archive No Wait for another story or visit your archive

What You Cannot Repost (And Why)?

The reposting restrictions on Instagram are intended to protect the user’s control over their content. You cannot:

  • Repost Stories from private accounts if you are not mentioned in the Story
  • Repost Stories if you are not mentioned in the Story
  • Take away attribution or pass off someone else’s Story as your own content

Not following these guidelines can result in trust problems, content conflicts, and lower engagement.

Who Can See Reposted Stories?

When you repost a Story on Instagram, the visibility of that repost is controlled by your own Story audience settings. It enables the following activities:

  • Anyone who can normally view your Stories can see the repost
  • If your account is public, the repost is visible to all viewers
  • If your account is private, only your approved followers can see it

Best Practices for Reposting Stories

Reposting stories on Instagram is all about how you share the content of another person in your story. Here’s how you can repost the content with respect to the original poster’s mention and context:

  • Add context: Add context to your story to declare how it is applicable to the interests of your audience.
  • Respect privacy: Refrain from reposting stories that include any media that includes personal information of the user.

Final Thoughts

Instagram’s stories let you share recent events with your friends and audience. But if you are reposting other Instagram users’ stories as your story, there are multiple factors that are applied when using their media in your account. Some of them include tagging, whether the story is still accessible, and the sharing preferences of the original poster. You can share stories that you are tagged in, stories that are public and eligible for sharing, or stories that you have saved from your own account. Yet, private or restricted stories are not allowed for sharing.
